Sheffield achieved worldwide fame throughout the 19th century for its production of steel. in actual fact, most innovations in the steel industry were conceived in sheffield, including crucible (now the name of one of the city's theatres) & stainless steel. inspite of the cost, competition from other countries caused a decline in these popular local industries during the seventies & eighties. at this time, the national coal industry collapsed nearby, which caused huge unemployment & affected Sheffield's population.
